The Last Night of the Proms, the famous summer concert season held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, has always had a special charm. This year, the stars of the concert were two women: Marin Alsop – the first woman conductor at the Proms – and the American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, who sang arias by Rossini and Handel along with patriotic and traditional English songs. Joyce wore two dresses, both made for her by the British designer Vivienne Westwood. The first outfit, fully embroidered with carmine red sequins, was reminiscent of 1950s bombshells; it featured a tight bustier with draped sweetheart neckline and a long skirt draped on one side. She also wore diamond jewellery – a ring, a bracelet and a necklace with large floral decoration. The second outfit was similar to the first but with some differences: the pink sequined one-shoulder dress had a knot on the back, sweetheart neckline, tight pointed bustier and pleated skirt. She completed the dress with pendant diamond earrings. At the end of the concert, while singing Rule, Britannia, Joyce surprised the audience: she wore a pink silk cape, reminiscent of butterfly wings, dreamy transfiguration of the Union Jack designed by Westwood. Serata dal fascino particolare quella dell’Ultima Notte dei Proms, la famosa stagione concertistica estiva che si tiene alla Royal Albert Hall di Londra. Quest’anno, protagoniste del concerto, due donne: Marin Alsop – primo direttore d’orchestra donna ai Proms – e la yankee-diva Joyce DiDonato la quale ha presentato arie di Rossini e di Haendel assieme a brani patriottici e tradizionali inglesi. Due gli abiti indossati da Joyce, entrambi della stilista inglese Vivienne Westwood. Il primo abito, completamente trapuntato di paillettes color rosso carminio, ricorda quello delle dive anno ’50: uno stretto bustier con scollatura drappeggiata a cuore e gonna lunga e stretta con drappeggio che parte da un fianco. Esaltano la figura della diva anche i gioielli in diamanti: anello, bracciale largo e collier con decoro floreale. Nella seconda parte del concerto, la diva americana ha indossato un abito simile al primo ma con alcune differenze: tessuto in paillettes rosa, monospalla terminante in un lungo nodo dietro, scollatura a cuore, stretto bustino terminante a punta su di un lato da cui partono piegoline che arricciano la lunga gonna. Abbinati a quest’abito, un paio di orecchini lunghi in diamanti. Colpo di scena nella parte finale quando Joyce, al momento di cantare “Rule, Britannia”, ha stupito il pubblico presentandosi con un mantello, simile ad ali di farfalla, trasfigurazione sognante della Union Jack pensata per l’occasione dalla Westwood. Grandioso!
